Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Knight Piésold
Martha Needs is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at Knight Piésold who graduated from Camborne School of Mines in 2018 with a MSc in Geotechnical Engineering.
Martha specialises in GISTM conformance, tailings facility audits, design and stability analysis. With Knight Piésold, Martha has audited over 70 tailings facilities against GISTM since it was issued in August 2020. This includes International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) members and non-members globally and at all stages of the tailings facility’s lifecycle. Martha has been working with projects in Kazakhstan since 2019.
Practical Application of GISTM
This presentation provides an introduction to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and demonstrates through case studies how each topic can be practically addressed. It reinforces the message that mines need to build and maintain a robust, multidisciplinary knowledge base covering social, environmental, geotechnical and operational aspects of each facility, and to use this knowledge iteratively throughout planning, design, operation and closure. A strong emphasis is placed on risk-informed, conservative design, including appropriate loading criteria, identification of potential failure modes, water management, and clearly documented design bases and operational procedures. The presentation also highlights the importance of management systems and governance, including formal tailings, environmental and social management systems, clear role definition and empowerment, regular reviews and audits, and a culture where personnel understand how their work relates to preventing failure. Emergency preparedness, response planning, and long-term recovery commitments are presented as integral parts of responsible tailings management.
