Hydrogeologist with more than 15 years of professional experience in Kazakhstan, including over 10 years in mining hydrogeology. Currently a PhD candidate at Satbayev University specializing in Hydrogeology.
His professional career began after graduating from the Geological Exploration College in Semey in 2011, after which he has continuously worked in the field. The early stage of his career was spent within JSC “Kokshetauhydrogeology”, where he was involved in the exploration and assessment of groundwater resources for municipal water supply, as well as in the protection and approval of groundwater reserves with governmental authorities.
In 2016, he joined LLP “Sary Kazna”, where he was first introduced to mining hydrogeology. Working within the environmental department, he participated in studies related to the potentional migration of contaminated water in the area of heap leaching waste dumps.
Since 2017, he has been working at JSC “AK Altynalmas”. For seven years he served as Chief Hydrogeologist, and since 2025 he has been leading the Water Resources Management Department, responsible for hydrogeology, water balance, water treatment, and integrated water resources management at the company’s mining operations.
Practical Approaches to Water Resources Management at Altynalmas
In the mining industry, water plays a dual role: on one hand, it is an essential operational resource required for technological processes, while on the other hand it can represent a significant geotechnical, environmental, and operational risk. Effective management of mine water, pit water, and groundwater requires a systematic approach that integrates hydrogeological knowledge, operational decision-making, and environmental management. In the context of increasing ESG requirements and evolving environmental legislation, water management has become one of the key elements of sustainable development for mining companies. JSC “AK Altynalmas”, one of the leading gold mining companies in Kazakhstan, is implementing an integrated approach to water resources management across its mining operations. The company has recently adopted a corporate Water Resources Management Policy aimed at improving water efficiency, reducing environmental risks, and ensuring transparent and responsible water use. As part of this initiative, a dedicated Water Resources Management Division was established based on the existing hydrogeological service of the company. The core of this approach is the integration of operational hydrogeology, environmental monitoring, and production processes. In practice, this includes groundwater and surface water monitoring, analysis of water inflows into underground mines and open pits, development of operational water balances, and implementation of water flow management solutions, including reuse of mine water in technological processes. The presentation will highlight practical approaches to water resources management implemented at the company’s mining sites, including monitoring systems, integration of hydrogeological data into operational decision-making, and strategies for improving water reuse. Particular attention will be given to the adaptation of water management practices to the requirements of the new Water Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and to the broader objectives of sustainable water use and environmental protection in the mining industry.
